Supported Operating Systems
Information Technology Services (ITS) will only provide support or grant network access, remote or on premise, for the versions of Operating Systems that meet the security requirements for a safe and secure computing environment. This document is intended to provide information on what operating systems are acceptable for use at the University of Redlands.
University of Redlands Owned Computers
The current Windows operating system that is installed and supported on all University of Redlands owned desktops and laptops is Windows 10. ITS maintains copies of the Windows Operating System licensed for University of Redlands owned computers only.
The current Mac OS X operating system that is supported on University of Redlands owned Mac laptops and desktops is OS X Monterey.
Personally Owned Computers
University of Redland provides network access, remote or on premise, to personal computers on the condition that the computer is running a supported Operating System. If a computer is not running a supported operating system, it will not connect to the network (i.e., no remote work). ITS does not provide technical assistance for personal computers attempting to connect to the network, beyond troubleshooting the VPN client or the Wi-Fi login. Supported operating systems include:
Windows OS
- Windows 11
- Windows 10 – Version 20H2 or higher
- Windows 8.1 (until 1/10/2023)
Mac OS
- Catalina (10.15)
- Big Sur (11)
- Monterey (12) – Current release
Mobile Devices & Tablets
ITS supports mobile devices (phones) & tablet OS that are up to date with patches and currently supported by the vendor. In some circumstances, a mobile device may be considered supported by the vendor, but is not compatible with University of Redlands network requirements
Linux
Linux versions that are currently supported with security releases will be authorized to connect to the University of Redlands network. ITS will make an effort to support network access for Linux clients, but there are so many varieties of Linux that full support is not possible.
Unsupported Operating Systems
- Windows XP - Out of support as of April 8, 2014
- Windows Vista - Out of support as of April 11, 2017
- Windows 7 - Out of support as of January 14, 2020
- Windows 8 – Out of support as of January 12, 2016
- Mac OS 10.0 to 10.14
As of the dates listed above, Microsoft no longer provides security updates or technical support for Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8. Apple does not publish end of life timelines as Microsoft does, however traditionally Apple continues to support the 3 most recent major releases with security updates. Security updates patch vulnerabilities that may be exploited by malware and help keep users and their data safer. PCs running non supported Operating Systems after the end of support are not considered to be protected, and it is important that you migrate to a current supported operating system – such as Windows 10 – so you can receive regular security updates to protect your computer from malicious attacks.
If you have equipment that requires an unsupported Windows operating system to function, such as scientific instrumentation or scanners that do not function on Windows 10 or higher, please contact the ITS Technical Support Services at tech_support@redlands.edu. We will collaborate with you to discuss upgrade options or make accommodations for your out of support computer.
